Self-Protection: It Is More Than Self-Defense.
Self-Defense is what happens when you are in the midst of an attack.
Self-Protection is, Let’s not go there in the first place, but if we do end up in a physical confrontation, then here is how you can defend yourself against the biggest, baddest person you’ve met recently.
The goal of Self-Protection is to never need Self-Defense. Self-Protection is living your life in such a way that those that are willing to harm someone, never choose you.
Everyone learns important concepts that they share with others.
One of these concepts that have been shared with me is that frequently, "Perception is Reality". A significant part of Self-Protection is based on this one point. That is not to say that all you need is perception. There must be a "Reality" backing up almost all of the perceptions people have of us. It is important to realize that we are included in the group called "people". If we have a certain perception about ourselves, it is easier for others to have that same perception of us. There are a variety of ways that can be accomplished.
Here are 5 ways you can build, or enhance, some of the realities that perceptions are built upon:
- The Perception that you will do what it takes to achieve your objectives.
To firmly build this perception we must actually live a life that, at least in what we consider significant areas, we achieve our objectives. If someone were to attack you, your objective would be to defend yourself successfully. As a result, they may choose a different person to attack.
One way that we can take personal responsibility in this area is:
!!: When promising follow-up/follow-thru, put it on the calendar:
Put when the follow-up/follow-thru will occur;
Put when the Preparation needed for the follow-up/follow-thru will occur;
And Finally… do what is on your calendar!
- The Perception that you are becoming better able to achieve your objectives.
To firmly build this perception we must have objectives. A great way to accomplish this is start with one objective. I suggest that you make that one/first objective be to have people in your life that will help you put into words what objectives that you already have, and to help you find and choose ways that you can achieve those objectives. In the business world this is called a Focus Group.
!!: Establish a Focus Group to brainstorm and to establish accountability.
Even if you can’t all get together in one place at the same time, perhaps you can video conference your meetings! Google provides a way of doing this. Google calls it Hangouts
- The perception that you know how to do things right.
To firmly build this perception you must do things that successful people do. Two of the things that are consistently true of successful people is that they are always early for their appointments, and they always complete their tasks early. These behaviors build self-confidence. Self-confidence is visible to other people through the body language of the confident person. This image of confidence communicates through all areas of your life, including giving the perception of your confidence that you are able to defend yourself if you need to defend yourself. As a result, they may choose a different person to attack.
!!: Be early for EVERYTHING, ALWAYS!
- The perception that you can quickly bring things to a conclusion.
This perception is built from the combination of points 1 and 3. The Perception that you will do what it takes to achieve your objectives, combined with the perception that you know how to do things right, builds the perception that you are efficient in what you do. It gives the perception that you will not allow an attacker time to find a second way to take advantage of you. In other words, if they don’t get it right the first time, they won’t have a chance for a second time. Frequently, those who cut corners in life do not have the confidence that they will always get it right the first time. As a result, they may choose a different person to attack.
!!: Do not let empty time be random time!
- Create and live out a plan that can help you to be come a person who exudes the confidence that:
You will do what it takes to achieve your objectives;
You are becoming better able to achieve your objectives;
You know how to do things right;
You can quickly bring things to a conclusion.
You can do these things by doing things in small, easy to achieve chunks.
!!: Identify ONE (1) growth point each month, and plan/schedule time during each week to grow in that area, and work to completion
